Building Bailey's Dam
The Red River's low water level trapped gunboats above the rapids at Alexandria. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bailey had the river dammed to raise the water level and float the gunboats over the shallow rapids. Here Union troops build the dam which eventually made it possible for the fleet to escape.
