Alexander Stephens (1812-1883)
Alexander Stephens was a senator from Georgia when Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Though publicly he worked to support the new president, privately he was convinced that secession was inevitable. And when the Confederate States of America were formed in March, 1861, he accepted the job of vice president.
