First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run)
The first major conflict between Union and Confederate armies occurred near Washington, DC, (in Virginia), where Union troops under Brigadier General Irvin McDowell advanced to a railroad junction which had been seized by the Confederates. Both sides fought well, but at 4PM, McDowell's troops started a retreat which became a rout. General P.G.T. Beauregard (shown here), Confederate hero of Fort Sumter, commanded the Southern forces.
