The Union Cavalry Headquarters

This Cavalry Headquarters at Giesboro in the District of Columbia contained stables for 6,000 horses, with total accommodations for 30,000 animals. Those included stables under roof, stockyards, forage houses, mess houses, a gristmill, personnel quarters, wharves on the Potomac River, a chapel, and a veterinary hospital which could accommodate 2,650 horses. The facility stored 15,000 troop provisions, with a permanent staff of 1,500 to operate Giesboro Depot.
