Thomas Paine published his first pamphlet, "Common Sense," on January 10, 1776. He went on to produce sixteen more pamphlets in a collection entitled "The American Crisis." All were signed "Common Sense." One was so fiery and inspiring, George Washington ordered it read to his disheartened troops at Valley Forge.
