Alexander Gardner's view of Main Street in Sharpsburg, Maryland, was taken either September 21st or 22nd. Here Lee came to a halt, his northern invasion stopped. Forced to the defensive, he now had to fight for his army's very life at the battle known as Antietam or Sharpsburg.
