"The final siege of Vicksburg, Miss., which began on May 19, 1863, ended with its surrender to the Union forces on July 4th of the same year. With its capitulation the Federals extended their control of the Mississippi river from end to end, dividing the Confederacy in two. Some of the captured artillery is shown in this picture. Photographer unknown."
