Headline, "President Truman Wipes Out Segregation in Armed Forces": The headline in this newspaper,The Chicago Defender, heralds President Truman's executive order 9981, by which he ended segregation in the Armed Forces. The order, which the paper called an "historic move, unprecedented since the time of Lincoln," was issued from the White House in July 1948.
