Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
Throughout the 1930s Winston Churchill was a lonely voice of opposition to the mounting militarism in Germany. But after the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, his point of view was finally embraced. Following his great war speech given in the House of Commons on September 3, 1939, Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Less than a year later, he became Prime Minister of Great Britain.
