This "mushroom cloud" appeared above Japan after the explosion of the atom bomb in early August, 1945. In the two atomic bomb attacks of that fateful August, more than 120,000 people died. If instead of the bomb a military invasion of Japan had been elected, it is certain that millions would have died on both sides. But the awesome specter of the new weapon--its terrible power for destruction--remains one of the most haunting legacies of World War II.
