Brigadier General William Wirt Adams, CSA (1819-1888)
Adams served in the Mississippi state legislature before the Civil War. He raised the 1st Mississippi Cavalry and was commissioned a colonel. Adams was promoted to brigadier general in 1863 and given command of a brigade. He was sometimes known as just Wirt Adams. He was killed in a street brawl with a newspaper editor who had criticized him in print.
