Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert was a brevet major general in the Union Army. A West Pointer (1855) from Delaware, he did consider joining the Confederacy but chose to remain with the U.S. Army. In October 1864 he was brevetted brigadier general at Cedar Creek. When Sheridan went to Petersburg, Torbert took command of the army and completed the war in the Valley, for which he was brevetted major general of regulars.
