General John Joseph Abercrombie (1798-1877)
Abercrombie was a career army officer who graduated from West Point in 1822. He fought in the Black Hawk and Seminole wars and the Mexican War. Abercrombie was a lieutenant colonel at the outbreak of the Civil War and was a brigade and division commander in the Army of the Potomac, the Department of the Shenandoah and in defense of Washington, DC. He was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers in 1861. In 1865, he was brevetted brigadier general of the regular U.S. army for his long and faithful service.
