George Bancroft (1800-1891)

Bancroft was an American historian, public official and diplomat. While serving as the secretary of the navy (1845-46), he established the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He also sent the Pacific squadron to capture California ports at the start of the Mexican War. As acting secretary of war, he sent General Zachary Taylor into Mexico. Bancroft also served as the U.S. minister to England (1846–49) and Prussia (1867-1874). He delivered the official eulogy for Abraham Lincoln to the U.S. congress. Bancroft was the author of the multi-volume "A History of the United States." This 1862 engraving published by Johnson & Fry, was based on a painting by Alonzo Chappel.
