General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks (1816-1894)

Nathaniel P. Banks was governor of Massachusetts from 1858 to 1861. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he used his political power to gain a military appointment. However, Banks did not prove to be an effective Union general and he returned to Massachusetts where he served six terms in the House of Representatives.
