General John Gross Barnard (1815-1882)
John Gross Barnard graduated second in his 1833 class of the U.S. Military Academy. During the Civil War he was chief engineer of the Washington defenses constructing fortifications to protect the capitol and was brevetted Major General. He wrote extensively on engineering, mathematical, and scientific subjects. His best-known work was A Report on the Defenses of Washington.
