General Joseph K. Barnes (1817-1883)
Joseph K. Barnes was a U.S. army medical officer and the surgeon general of the United States during the Civil War. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's medical school in 1838. Barnes was among the physicians attending President Abraham Lincoln's deathbed after he was shot and was responsible for the official declaration of death. He also attended the mortally wounded President James Garfield.
