Earl Van Dorn (d.1863)
Earl Van Dorn was a major general in the Confederate Army. He was a West Pointer (1842) from Mississippi who fought in the Mexican War and in Indian Territory. Van Dorn resigned the U.S. Army in 1861 and was named brigadier general of the Mississippi State Troops. One month later, in February, 1861, Van Dorn was appointed major general. His great potential was lost on May 7, 1863, when a jealous husband, Dr. George Peters, killed him.
