George Leonard Andrews (1828-1899)

George Leonard Andrews graduated first in his class at West Point in 1847. He entered the Civil War as lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry and was subsequently promoted to brigadier general and then major general. He was the Union commander at Baton Rouge and organized and trained African American troops raised from the plantations of Louisiana and Mississippi.
