John Russell Bartlett (1805-1886)
Bartlett was a historian, anthropologist and philologist. He was the commissioner of the controversial Mexican Boundary Survey expedition of 1850-53. While in the southwest, he made ethnological studies of the Pima and Maricopa tribes. Bartlett also served as the secretary of state of Rhode Island for almost twenty years. He wrote and published indexes of Rhode Island's historical records; wrote historical volumes on Civil War literature and memoirs; and compiled a catalog of John Carter Brown's collection of colonial Americana.
