Edward Bates (1793-1869)

Bates was a lawyer and Whig politician from Missouri who joined the Republican Party before the American Civil War and served as Abraham Lincoln's attorney general. Bates was the first cabinet officer from the region west of the Mississippi. Early in 1860, a Bates-for-president movement was launched in Missouri. His supporters contended that a Free-Soil Whig elected on a Republican ticket would avert secession, but when the Republican convention was moved to Chicago instead of St. Louis, his campaign lost an advantage to Lincoln.
