General Henry Washington Benham (1813-1884)

Henry Washington Benham graduated first in the West Point class of 1837. Benham served in the Mexican War and during the Civil War he was brevetted major general for his service. Benham was commissioned in the corps of engineers after the war and was in charge of the construction of defenses at Boston and New York harbors.
