Engineers Constructing Road during Grant's Wilderness Campaign
A unit of the 50th New York Engineers is cutting road on the south bank of the North Anna River, in order for Grant to get his army across at Jericho Mills, VA. A pontoon bridge can be seen in the distance, crossing the river to the mills. Black Union soldiers were frequently used for this type of heavy labor.
