Civil War Embalming Shed

Dr. Bunnell (1823-91) operated several embalming buildings in the field. This one, near Fredericksburg, advertises "Free from Odor or Infection." "Embalming surgeons" could pitch a tent near the battlefield. Often there were hundreds of bodies a day. Undertaking was a new profession and quite profitable.
