Prof. Maillefert at Dutch Gap Canal
Benjamin S. H. Maillefert (1813-1864) was a Union Army engineer who specialized in underwater blasting. He developed torpedoes used by naval forces during the Civil War. This photo was taken after the riverbank was blown out, and heavy rains opened the Dutch Gap Canal.
