General William Plummer Benton (1828-1867)
William Plummer Benton served in the Mexican War and at the outbreak of the Civil War he was a judge of the common pleas court in Wayne County, Indiana. He enlisted in the Union army when Fort Sumter was fired upon. Benton was in the battles of Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, and the siege of Vicksburg. He was brevetted Brigadier General for gallantry.
