Timothy Shay Arthur (1809-1885)

Shay was a temperance crusader, and magazine editor and publisher. He was also a novelist who was one of the most popular American authors of his time. He is best known for his novel Ten Nights in a Bar Room and What I Saw There which was turned into the play The Drunkard.
