James Mitchell Ashley (1824-1896)
Ashley was an abolitionist who helped slaves to escape on the Underground Railroad. He served as a representative in the United States Congress from Ohio from 1859 until 1869. Ashley drew up the bill to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia and introduced the first proposition to amend the Constitution of the United States, so as to abolish slavery. Ashley introduced the articles of impeachment against President Andrew Johnson in 1867.
