John Jacob Astor III (1822-1890)

Astor was the heir to his family's fortune who made large contributions to many institutions and causes including the New York Cancer Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, the Metropolitan Museum, the Children's Aid Society, the Trinity Church, and the Astor Library which would eventually evolve into the New York Public Library. He fought for the Union in the Civil War and was brevetted brigadier general for his service in the Peninsular campaign. The fortune left by Astor is estimated at from $75,000,000 to $100,000,000.
