Henry Bergh (1811?-1888)
Berg founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in 1866 and served as its president until his death in 1888. For the first few years of the the society's existence, he personally arrested and prosecuted all violators of New York state's animal anti-cruelty laws. He also helped to found the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty in 1875 to protect children.
