John James Audubon (1785-1851)

Audubon, an ornithologist, naturalist and artist. One of the first to study and draw the birds and animals of America, his paintings became the basis for his book, "The Birds of America." He obtained his specimens by hunting which was a common practice of naturalists at this time. This 1861 engraving was based on a painting by Alonzo Chappel and published by Johnson, Fry & Co.
