John Bigelow (1817-1911)
Bigelow was a writer, journalist and consul general to France during the Civil War. He was the editor of the antislavery and free trade newspaper New York Evening Post and wrote a book about slaves who had become free men in Jamaica and Haiti. Bigelow also wrote several important biographies on Benjamin Franklin and William Cullen Bryant as well as a book on France and the Confederate Navy.
