David Bell Birney (1825-1864)
David Bell Birney was famous as one of the most ardent enemies of slavery among Union army generals. At the outbreak of the Civil War he organized the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers. He fell ill in 1864 and went home to Philadelphia where he died. This carte de visite features an engraving of of Birney's portrait.
