General John Milton Brannan (1819-1892)

John Milton Brannan graduated from West Point in 1841 and served as an artillery officer attaining the rank of captain for his bravery in the Mexican War. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed Brigadier General and assigned as commander of the department of Key West, Florida. Brannan was later appointed as chief of artillery of the Army of the Cumberland and promoted to Major General. His bravery and leadership of his division during the 1863 Battle of Chickamaua led to his corps commander's reputation as "The Rock of Chickamauga." After the war, he remained a professional soldier until disability forced his retirement in 1882.
