"Presenting the Declaration of Independence"
This famous stylized painting by John Trumbull was completed after nine years of work in 1796. In it, the drafting committee of five, with Thomas Jefferson looming in front, presents the Declaration of Independence to the Continental Congress and its president, John Hancock. After heavy editing of the committee's draft of the Declaration, Congress adopted a final version on July 4, 1776. Even though it was a more moderate document than what Jefferson had originally composed, the Declaration was nothing less than a public commitment to revolution.
