Gideon Welles (1802-1878)
Gideon Welles was one of the founders of the Republican party and served as the secretary of the Navy under President Lincoln and then Johnson. He supervised the expansion of the Union naval forces and advocated the development of ironclads. Welles was also the editor of the Hartford Times newspaper from 1826-36.
