Inside Castle Pinckney, Charleston Harbor
On December 27, 1860, this federal fort (built in the 1790s) surrendered to South Carolina militia and its small Union garrison retired to Fort Sumter. Castle Pinckney became the first Federal military position seized by a Southern state government. The Confederates used it to house Union prisoners of war from Bull Run.
