John Brown (1800-1859)
John Brown led a raid on a government armory and arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He was captured, tried and found guilty of treason against Virginia and was hanged at Charleston in 1859. Brown believed he was acting as an instrument of God in an attempt to free the slaves. There was a history of insanity in his family and seventeen neighbors and relatives testified to his insanity.
