William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878)
Bryant was an important American poet, literary critic and journalist. He was known especially for his poems about nature. He was the editor-in-chief and part owner of the New York Evening Post newspaper for almost fifty years. Through his speeches and editorials, Bryant was an advocate for free trade, human rights and the abolition of slavery.
