Ward Burnett (1810-1884)
Burnett graduated from West Point in 1832 and fought in the Black Hawk war. He served in the Mexican War as a colonel with the 2nd New York Volunteers with great bravery. He was brevetted Brigadier-General for gallant and distinguished service. Burnett became a civil engineer and served as the superintendent of dry dock at the Philadelphia and Brooklyn Navy Yards. He also worked as the chief engineer for the Brooklyn, New York and Norfolk, and Virginia water works. He helped design the Croton dam and reservoir system for New York City. From 1858 to 1860 he was United States Surveyor General of Kansas and Nebraska.
