George Stoneman (1822-1894)
George Stoneman, appointed brigadier general of volunteers in 1861, commanded the cavalry in the Army of the Potomac. With the cavalry corps, he undertook "Stoneman's Raids," and left General Hooker with no cavalry. Poor judgment caused him to be captured with 700 of his men in Stoneman's and McCook's Raids.
