General Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818-1893)

A criminal lawyer and powerful state legislator from Massachusetts, Benjamin F. Butler was a delegate to the Democratic convention in Charleston, South Carolina in 1860. He was the first major general of volunteers appointed by Lincoln, but he proved to be incompetent. After the Civil War, as a Republican U.S. Congressman, he played a major role in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. He was later elected Governor of Massachusetts. He graduated from Waterville College (now Colby College) in 1838.
