General Daniel Butterfield (1831-1901)

Daniel Butterfield was a successful businessman with the American Express company in New York City. During the Civil War, he rose quickly in the Union army from colonel of the 12th New York militia to the rank of Major General. He was wounded at Gettysburg and he won the Medal of Honor for service at Gaines' Mill. Butterfield is shown here on horseback.
