Barnum's "Moral Lecture Room"

Barnum's was one of New York City's largest and most modern theaters. Once expanded and redecorated, Barnum's biggest challenge and ultimate success was reclaiming the theater as a reputable middle-class institution. Above the stage, the theater's official motto stated, "We study to please."
