James McDougal Hart (1828-1901)
Hart was an American painter known for his landscapes and pastoral cattle scenes which were endowed with tranquillity. Hart had a romantically poetic sense of time and place. He was part of the second wave of the Hudson River school of painting. His family came to America from Scotland when he was a child and settled near Albany, New York. His brother, William Hart, was also a painter.
