Hugh Hastings (1820-1883)

Hastings came to the United States in 1831 from Ireland and settled in Albany, New York, where he was a reporter for the Albany "Atlas" and then established the Albany "Weekly Switch." He also established the "Knickerbocker" and eventually became the editor and proprietor of the New York "Commercial Advertiser." He took an active part in state and national politics, devoting himself to the interests of the Whig party and its successor, the Republican party.
