Daniel Huntington (1816-1906)
Huntington was one of the most successful, versatile, and well-documented of nineteenth-century American painters. His paintings, characterized by an earnest religiosity and informed by a literary turn of mind, are often undermined by his consciously derivative approach, didactic purpose, and indifferent technical grounding. While his works have faded into virtual oblivion, Huntington's career stands as an important representative of the vital persistence of European tradition in American art.
