Robert G. Ingersoll (1833-1899)
An American lawyer and lecturer known as the great agnostic, Ingersoll questioned the tenets of Christian belief in his lectures, drawing large audiences through his eloquence and irreverent wit and provoking denunciations from the orthodox. He also served in the Union army during the Civil War.
