David Livingstone (1813-1873)

Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and explorer who exercised a formative influence upon Western attitudes toward Africa. He believed wholeheartedly in the African's ability to advance into the modern world. He traveled for thirty years in Africa often in places where no European had previously ventured. His discoveries—geographic, technical, medical, and social—provided a complex body of knowledge that is still being explored.
