John Lothrop Motley (1814-1877)
Motley was an American historian and diplomat. He spent a short period in 1841 as secretary of the U.S. legation at St. Petersburg and later was minister to Austria from 1861 to 1867. He was the author of two novels concerning Thomas Morton, as well as a number of articles for the North American Review. He was also the author of several works concerning the history of the Netherlands.
